Kapil Mohan, the founder of the world’s best selling dark rum, Old Monk and the chairman and managing director of the first-known brewery in India – Mohan Meakin – died reportedly due to a cardiac arrest in Ghaziabad’s Mohan Nagar on January 6, Saturday. He was 88.
Old Monk is the third-largest selling rum in the world and has been the biggest Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brand for many years. Besides Old Monk, the other famous brands from his stable were Solan No.1, and Golden Eagle. He is survived by his wife Pushpa Mohan, his son-in-law and three grandchildren. His daughter Seema Bakshi passed away last year.

#1 Kapil Mohan received the fourth highest Indian civilian Padma Shri award in 2010.
#2 He also received Vishisht Seva Medal for his great work
#3 He served to Indian Armed Forces and was a brigadier at the time of his retirement.
#4 His elder brother VR Mohan died in the early 1970s. After his death, Mohan led the Mohan Meakin group of companies which expanded its manufacturing activities into other fields as well including – fruit juices, breakfast cereals and mineral water. Under Mohan’s leadership, Old Monk became a global brand.
#5 Mohan launched Old Monk rum on 19 December 1954, after his father took over the company from Dyer Meakin Breweries.
#6 He was also the chairman and managing director of Narinder Mohan Hospital in Ghaziabad and patron of General Mohyal Sabha, the apex body of the Mohyal community. He was also director of several Indian companies.
