Some upcoming episodes of the famous series “Game of Thrones” have been hacked by a group using “Mr. Smith” as their name. Recently, stolen HBO files were released by the hackers, and they have demanded millions of dollars ransom from HBO to prevent further release of its episodes.
On July 30th, reporters received an anonymous email from the hackers announcing the hack. It was:
“Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”
In data dump, the script of five episodes of the series was included in it along with an upcoming episode of it. It further included one month’s email details belong to the account of HBO’s vice president, Leslie Cohen. It also has internal documents including a job offer letter sent to top executives along with a legal report of claims against the network.
Previously, HBO acknowledged that “proprietary information” has stolen from them and thus they are investigating the theft along with cyber security and police. The network made a statement on Monday by saying that they still can’t believe that their entire email system has been compromised.
Also, it is quite shocking as this is the second time when they get data dump sent by the hackers. However, the leaks of HBO have been limited so far as they aren’t like the leaks that happened to Sony in 2014.
That attack was a nightmare for Sony as personal information like social security numbers and salaries of employees along with embarrassing emails were being unearthed by the hackers. Now, coming back to HBO, hackers claim to have scripts, shows and movies, upcoming episodes of HBO along with damaging information to ruin HBO image.
In the video sent to HBO, “Mr. Smith” warned the network that if they doesn’t pay the demanded ransom, they will disclose all the information they have. If they don’t want this, then they should be in hurry to deliver the demanded amount in Bitcoin which is around $ 6 million.
Well, not only HBO but almost all the networks are worried about such attacks. Who knows the hackers are up to target other networks for ransom? For now, their personal information along with the contents of the upcoming episode is the major concern of HBO, and they are hoping to solve this problem as soon as possible.
Cybercrime and police have accelerated the investigation process to find out the hackers. If such dangerous hackings will not stop as soon as possible, then we might be having some serious issues in future. We just hope that all this chaos will solve soon.
